The product

What is Delimixx?

A CSV / TSV editor for Windows. It keeps the encoding, BOM and line endings, writes an unedited file back byte for byte (conditions below), and stores colors, column widths and hidden rows and columns in a separate sidecar file, not in the CSV.

Is it free?

The current download is a free prototype (version 0.3.0): it needs no account, does not expire, and lets you have up to 20 files (tabs) open at a time. The full release is planned to have a Pro edition with more tools, which needs a paid license. See Pricing.

How long will the prototype be available?

The prototype is planned to be withdrawn after the full release; the date is not decided. Copies you already have keep working. After distribution ends, the prototype will not be updated, and we will not provide support or bug fixes for it.

Which systems does it run on?

Windows 11 (64-bit, x86-64). Windows 10 and earlier, macOS and Linux are not supported.

Files and data

Does Delimixx write formatting into my CSV?

No. Colors, column widths, and hidden rows and columns are saved in a sidecar file next to the CSV (<file>.cvdeco). The CSV holds only your data.

What is the .cvdeco file? Can I delete it?

The sidecar file where Delimixx keeps per-file settings. Deleting it loses those settings (colors, widths) but never affects the CSV; someone who receives only the CSV will not see them. You can turn the sidecar off in Settings > General.

What does saving change, and what does it keep?

If you open a file and save it without editing, it is written back byte for byte. This holds with the Save format switch (Settings > General > Save) on, which is the default, with the default quote settings and no per-column quote rules, and with the encoding, delimiter, BOM and line endings unchanged.

If you edit a cell and save, the characters outside the cells you edited do not change; the encoding, delimiter, BOM, line endings and final newline are kept. These are the exceptions, where parts you did not edit change too:

  • Mixed line endings are unified to those of the first line.
  • Unneeded quotes are removed ("1","alice" becomes 1,alice, and an empty "" becomes an empty cell: a,"",c becomes a,,c). Cells that need quotes (a delimiter, a line break or a quote inside) keep them.
  • Inconsistent quotes are written again as valid CSV (al"ice becomes "al""ice").
  • Blank lines become rows of empty cells.

If you choose another encoding, delimiter, BOM or line ending when saving, or change the quote settings, the file is converted as you chose. To always normalize, switch Save format off under Settings > General > Save (this is not the Save format (encoding, BOM, line ending) dialog of the File menu). Before each save, Delimixx also puts a backup copy in a .delimixx-backups folder next to the file (5 generations by default).

Does it turn 00123 or dates into numbers?

No. Values such as 00123, 1E5 and +81-90-… are kept exactly as written.

Which encodings are supported?

UTF-8 (with or without BOM), UTF-16, Shift-JIS, EUC-JP, JIS (ISO-2022-JP), GBK, GB18030, Big5 and EUC-KR. Delimixx detects the encoding when it opens a file; if it guesses wrong, reopen the file with the encoding you choose. A very short file (a single character, for example) or a file of symbols only can be detected wrongly, so choose the encoding by hand then. Rare characters outside the usual range (for example CJK Extension B, such as U+20000) are drawn with a font that Windows provides; on a PC without a font that has them, a box may be shown instead. Saving keeps the opened file's encoding, BOM and line endings. Delimiters (comma, tab, semicolon, pipe) are detected automatically too; you can also choose one by hand.

How big a file can I open?

The whole file is loaded into memory, which needs much more than the file size. Measured example: one million rows and ten columns (about 70 MB) opened in about one second and used about 740 MB on our test PC (a 2018 desktop with 32 GB). Results vary. Delimixx warns you before opening a file that may not fit. Files of several gigabytes are not a goal.

Does Delimixx have autofill (series)?

Yes. Drag the fill handle at the bottom-right corner of a cell. Double-clicking it fills down to the end of the data. Numbers, dates, times, weekdays, month names (also the old Japanese month names), quarters and the Japanese zodiac and stem calendars continue as a series; text ending in a number, such as item1, item2, increases its last number (leading zeros are kept); other values are repeated. ID-like text such as abc123 also increases (abc124); if you do not want that, choose "Copy cell" in the options that appear after you drag. You can extend down and right, and also up and left. Delimixx asks before overwriting data when you extend up or left, or fill a large range, and refuses a range of more than 1,000,000 cells. One undo reverts the whole fill.

Is there a limit on how many files (tabs) I can have open?

Yes. In the prototype you can have up to 20 files (tabs) open at a time. Every open tab counts. The untitled tab you are looking at, if you have not typed anything in it, is replaced when you open a file, so it is not counted (only that one tab). Other untitled tabs count even if empty, and an untitled tab you have edited, even slightly, counts as one. Opening a file that is already open just switches to its tab and does not add to the count. At 20, you cannot open another file or create a new tab. A message says "You can have up to 20 files open at once. Close some and open again." (for a new tab, a similar message about tabs), so close a few and try again.

Is a backup made before saving?

Yes, on by default. Each save writes a backup into a .delimixx-backups folder next to the file, or into one folder you choose. You choose how many generations to keep.

Privacy

Are my files or my usage sent anywhere?

No. Delimixx does not send file contents, edits or how you use it anywhere, and there is no telemetry. The prototype connects to the internet only if you turn on the update check or press Check for updates; it then asks a public server whether a newer version exists, and the server can see your IP address and the program's version. Pro adds a few small connections (a signed list of revoked keys, and renewal of subscription keys); see the Privacy Policy. The current prototype build has none of them.

Installing and updating

Can I install the prototype and the release version at the same time?

The prototype is a ZIP with nothing to install: extract it into its own folder and delete the folder to remove it. You can keep builds in different folders, but you cannot run two at once: starting a second one shows "Another Delimixx (the prototype or the full version) is already running. Please use the existing window.", whichever folders they use. In the free prototype build, double-clicking a file in Explorer while Delimixx is running does not open it in the running window; use File > Open there.

The prototype keeps its settings, logs and crash-recovery copies in its own folder (%USERPROFILE%\.delimixx-prototype). They are not carried over to the release version; set it up again in the settings if you need to. Backups stay next to the file you opened. The update check is off by default, can be started by hand, and only tells you that a newer version exists; nothing expires, so an older version keeps working. The release version is the same product; how it is installed will be explained at release.

Windows shows a SmartScreen warning. Is the file safe?

Delimixx is signed, but a new publisher has no reputation with SmartScreen yet, so a warning may appear (and may appear again with a new version). The signature and the SHA-256 let you check that the file is genuine. Check the SHA-256 and the signature as described on the Download page, then choose More info and Run anyway.

How do I update?

Turn on the update check in the settings, or press Check for updates on the App Information page. Delimixx tells you when a newer version exists; you download it yourself from the Download page. Nothing is installed automatically. For the ZIP, extract the new version into a new folder and delete the old one later; your settings in %USERPROFILE%\.delimixx-prototype carry over.

How do I remove Delimixx completely?

Delete the program folder (where you unzipped it); this does not remove the settings folder (%USERPROFILE%\.delimixx-prototype), so delete that folder too to remove everything. If you activated Pro, also delete the license from the Windows Credential Manager. Backups and sidecar files sit next to your own files and are not removed automatically.

Buying Pro

When can I buy Pro?

Pro goes on sale with the full release. The current download is the prototype.

What does Pro cost?

The prices have not been announced yet. Pro is planned as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time purchase, and the prices will appear on the Pricing page before Pro goes on sale.

Who sells Delimixx? Is my payment safe?

Paddle.com is our Merchant of Record. Paddle sells the license to you, takes the payment and handles taxes and receipts. We never see your card details.

Can I get a refund?

You can ask Paddle for a refund within 14 days of a payment. Paddle decides each request under its Refund Policy, and a request does not guarantee a refund, except where the law gives you a right to one (for example the statutory withdrawal right of consumers in the EU, the EEA, Switzerland and the UK). See the Refund Policy.

Can I use Delimixx for work?

Yes. The prototype costs nothing for business use. A Pro license belongs to one person, who can use it on all of their own devices; anyone who uses Pro for work (freelance, contract or company, on their own computer or a company one) needs their own license. Bulk purchase, invoicing and company contracts are not offered at present.

Do I need to be online to use Pro?

No. The license key is verified inside the app, offline. Delimixx goes online only for the optional update check (off by default); while a valid Pro key is in use, for a small signed list of revoked keys about every 7 days; and, for 14 days after a subscription key expires, to look for a renewed key. Pressing Check again on the License page also connects, but only at that moment. See the Privacy Policy.

What happens when my subscription ends?

After the 14 days of renewal grace, Pro features stop and the app returns to Free. Your files and data are never changed, and opening and saving stay available in Free. A one-time license never expires.

How is a subscription key renewed?

You do not need to paste a new key. A monthly or yearly key has an expiry date. After it passes, if the subscription has been paid, the app fetches a new key online by itself within 14 days: it checks when it starts and, while running in the system tray, every 6 hours, never before the expiry date. The License page in the settings shows the days left. If no new key arrives within 14 days (for example, the computer was not started), the key lapses and the app returns to Free with your data untouched, and the License page says so; if payment resumes, press Check again on the License page. One-time licenses and Free are never checked. The check sends only the key's identifier (an opaque ID), not a device ID, name or email address. See the Privacy Policy.

My key is shown as revoked. What can I do?

A key is revoked after a full refund or a finalized chargeback, or for misuse or a leaked key (see the Terms). If a revocation is cancelled, we remove the key from the revoked-key list; press Check again on the License page and the app downloads the list again (it sends nothing), and Pro works again. A key revoked after a refund or a finalized chargeback stays revoked. If the revocation is unexpected, press Check again; if the key is still revoked, write to [email protected]. The License page also shows the date the revoked-key list was last checked.

I found a Delimixx license key published online.

Please tell us at [email protected]. We may revoke a shared or published key after human review of the case, and the rightful owner receives a replacement key. We offer no rewards. Revocation takes effect in the app only after it downloads a signed list containing it.

I lost my license key.

Write to [email protected] from the email address you used to buy, and include your order number if you have it.

Support

The window is blank, garbled or freezes. What can I do?

Delimixx uses software drawing by default. If the display is garbled or feels slow, open Settings > General > Rendering, switch Rendering mode between GPU and Software, and restart. If the window does not open at all, Delimixx restarts itself in software mode; you can also run delimixx.exe --software-rendering.

How do I have my data deleted?

Write to [email protected]. If the license is still valid, deleting its record means the key stops working, so we first ask whether you agree. Payment records are held by Paddle, which we cannot delete; we also keep our own transaction records for the period Japanese tax and bookkeeping rules require (up to about 8 years), and cannot delete them earlier. See sections 7 and 9 of the Privacy Policy.

Where do I report a bug or ask for a feature?

See Support. You can write in English or Japanese; we reply in Japanese to messages written in Japanese, and in English to all others.
